In an attempt to shed light on the protests, which have included tens of thousands of farmers camping out on roads in cold winter conditions in New Delhi and a violent exchange at the city’s Red Fort complex, Rihanna shared a link from CNN and tweeted, “why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest.”

The report that Rihanna linked to explains that the country shut down internet access around the capital due to the violent clash that took place which lead to the death of a protester, 100 demonstrators still missing, and four hundred police officers injured. Additionally, the article explains that Reuters cited two unnamed sources that reported that Twitter blocked multiple accounts in India “on the demand of the government.”

Protesters have been critical of three farm bills that have been backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Farmers have been protesting for months, concerned that major agricultural companies will jeopardize their survival.

Both Rihanna and Greta Thunberg have tweeted about the ongoing protests in order to drum up the much needed international attention around the issue.
