While the cause of death has not been disclosed, the 54-year-old was open about his congestive heart failure in the past years. In their “Royalty Capes” video, he spoke about this diagnosis and how it was holding him back from performing. “I’m ready to just get back to the stage. I miss it,” he said.

Being one of the founding members of the legendary rap group, he was missed at the 65th GRAMMY Awards last weekend during the Hip-Hop tribute as his bandmate, Posdnuos was a part of the performance.

Formed in 1988, De La Soul is a 3 time GRAMMY nominee, ultimately winning in Best Pop Collaboration in 2006 for their work with Gorillaz. The trio is revered as one of the most impactful and influential groups in Hip-Hop history.
