The Mets continue to hit new lows. After getting swept in New York by the Toronto Blue Jays, they went down to Atlanta for another sweep at the hands of the Braves.
Not only were the Mets swept, but they had their two “aces” on the mound in the final games of the series in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.
Scherzer and Verlander combined to give up 10 runs (nine earned) in 8 ⅔ innings. Neither starter took the loss due to the Mets offense putting up some runs, but it was a horrendous showing in a big spot.
WFAN’s Evan Roberts sounded off on the “mercenary pieces of crap” on the Audacy Original Podcast “Rico Brogna” after the Mets were swept in Atlanta on Thursday night.
“I’d say it’s unbelievable but it’s not unbelievable! They find new ways to lose,” Roberts said (6:09 in player above). “Now the offense wakes up, Justin Verlander takes a giant turd all over the Mets’ chances.”
Verlander allowed three runs in the first inning, but the offense came alive in the second to give the Mets a 5-3 lead. They added on another run in the top of the third inning after a scoreless second for the Braves, but Atlanta chased Verlander after scoring two more in the bottom of the third.
After that, the Mets continued to add on runs in the middle innings before the Braves stormed back with two runs in the eighth, a game-tying home run in the ninth, and a walk-off homer in the 10th.
“It was a collective fail by the bullpen and Justin Verlander. The Mets spend $90 million on these two mercenary pieces of crap who’ve done nothing,” Roberts said. “Max Scherzer’s pretended to do something because his overall numbers are good and he’s had some really good starts. But think about what he did last year … Max Scherzer pitched well, missed a big chunk of time, and then when they needed him the most against the Atlanta Braves and then in the playoffs against the Padres, he wasn’t bad, he was awful.”
Thursday night was Verlander’s seventh start with the Mets. He had two “bloody awful” starts allowing six runs to the Rays and Rockies, and the four earned runs he gave up to the Braves probably adds another to that category.
“What a dud of a performance by the $45 million man.”
