Jim Harbaugh’s name is once again emerging as a potential head coaching candidate in the NFL.
The Michigan head coach just completed arguably his most impressive regular season, winning the Big Ten Championship and will likely be the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff as he looks to bring a national championship to his alma mater.
According to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, teams are “doing background work” on whether or not Harbaugh may want to return to the NFL.
Harbaugh said last year, after interviewing with the Minnesota Vikings, that he was closing the door on a potential return to the NFL but per Pelissero and Rapoport, sources tell them that Harbaugh could change course if asked and it is the “right situation.”
The 58-year-old has not coached in the NFL since 2014 but put together a 44-18-1 record in four seasons as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, which included two NFC Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance, which he lost to his brother, John Harbaugh, and the Baltimore Ravens.
Since becoming head coach at his alma mater in2 015, Harbaugh is 74-24 and 1-5 in bowl games, but reached the CFP semifinal last season and will return again, with a possible rematch against Ohio State, whom he has defeated the last two years.
If Harbaugh can deliver a national championship in Ann Arbor, it will be interesting to see if views his work at Michigan complete, or if he would prefer to stay there and continue to build on his legacy.
