Tom Brady and Tyrann Mathieu have always played for rival teams, but that hasn’t stopped them from forging a friendship.
Look at any one of Brady’s Instagram posts, and Mathieu almost always comments words of support. Brady often will reciprocate.
It’s not uncommon for NFL players, especially stars like Brady and Mathieu, to become connected for varying reasons – whether it’s public appearances or working out in the offseason with the same trainer.
Whatever it is that brought the quarterback and safety together, it has helped them build a bond, one that Mathieu shed light on Thursday during an appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show”.
“He always reaches out to me, and I try my best to always reach out to him,” Mathieu said after telling Eisen he had recently talked to Brady to congratulate him on his new deal with Fox. “I think football aside, this is a good dude. This is a guy that has a lot to offer as far as just keeping you about life off the field, whether it be business, whether it be taking care of your body. He’s just a great resource to have, and I’m more so impressed that guys like him take the time to entertain little guys like me, because god knows he doesn’t have to entertain anybody.
“But for him to take time out of his day, he’s always reached out, always sending congratulations, he'll always be somebody I’m grateful for. I think that says a lot about his character, Brady is a good dude.
“He’s easy to approach, he’s easy to talk to and I think he offers you that. I think he offers you that ability to ask him anything, ask him whatever. We’ve always been competitive against each other on the field, even going back to when I was in Houston and he was in New England, so me and him go way back, it’s always fun to compete against him. But like I said, off the field if you’ve got anything to ask him about anything, he usually gets back to you, for sure.”
Now with the Saints, Mathieu is going to square off against Brady and the Buccaneers twice a season. Despite their apparent fondness for each other, that has never stopped them from going at one another during games -- with their spat during Super Bowl LV being a prime example.
Asked if Brady is being nice just so Mathieu will take it a little easier on him, the 30-year-old jokingly conceded.
Quipped Mathieu: “Oh no, he probably is.”
