Legendary actor James Earl Jones, whose booming voice gave life to characters like Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” died on Monday. He was 93.
Jones’ reps confirmed the actor’s death to Deadline.
Jones is the recipient of the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). In 2002, he received the Kennedy Center Honor.
Jones also appeared in “Dr. Strangelove,” “Coming to America” (as well as its 2021 sequel), “The Hunt for Red October,” and “Field of Dreams.”
Jones spoke openly about his struggles with stuttering as a child. In an interview with The Daily Mail, the actor said he was nearly mute as a child due to his stutter. He credited a teacher for helping him find his voice.
“'I had started writing poetry in high school and he said of one of them, "Jim, this is a good poem. In fact, it is so good I don't think you wrote it. I think you plagiarised it,” he said in the interview. “If you want to prove you wrote it, you must stand in front of the class and recite it by memory. Which I did. As they were my own words, I got through it.'”
