President-elect Donald Trump took to social media last week to rant about American flags possibly being at half-staff in honor of late President Jimmy Carter during his inauguration.
The possibility comes after President Joe Biden ordered flags be lowered to half-staff for 30 days from the day of Carter’s death in honor of the former president. The action is also customary for when a US president dies.
In response to this, Trump took to Truth Social to share his displeasure, despite recently announcing that he would attend Carter’s memorial service in Washington, DC, on Jan. 9.
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” Trump said, using the term that is often used when discussing the lowered position of a flag on a ship. “They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves.”
Trump added that because of Carter’s death, the American flag would “for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast.”
“Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out,” he said.
The decision seems to be set for now, as White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House had no plans on changing its plans.
