President-elect Donald Trump appeared to take a shot at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, calling him the “governor” of the “Great State of Canada.”
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”
Trump was referring to a dinner he had with Trudeau after he threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico if the flow of migrants and drugs into the US wasn’t seriously addressed by both nations.
In the days after the two met, Trudeau appeared to take a shot at Trump for his threats during a Monday event at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
The prime minister said Americans “are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive,” according to the Associated Press.
Trudeau said that he would retaliate if Trump put the tariffs he’s threatened into place, adding that working with the president-elect will be “a little more challenging” because Trump’s plans are clearer than when he was elected in 2016, the AP reported.
The two have had several conversations since Trump’s victory, including a call last month, which Trudeau described as a “good call.”
During an interview with “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Trump was asked about tariffs, saying he couldn’t “guarantee” that his tariffs wouldn’t raise prices.
“I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow. But I can say that if you look at my — just pre-COVID, we had the greatest economy in the history of our country,” Trump said.
