Things have gone from bad to worse for the 76ers, as ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that All-Star Tyrese Maxey will miss “a couple of weeks” with a hamstring injury after Philly fell to 1-6 with a loss to the Clippers on Wednesday night.
Joe and Hugh were live on the air when the news broke, and not surprisingly, they were distraught at the idea of an already struggling team losing what has been its most productive player.
“The start of the season is a disaster for the 76ers in every way, shape, and form,” Joe said. “They are a 1-6 basketball team, and I don’t even know what several weeks means. If they’re gonna be cautious, a month?”
Based on Charania’s report, two weeks could be the goal, but with the caveat that they will be “cautious” mixed with Maxey’s body type and play style, Hugh is worried that the Sixers will be without their star guard for even longer, perhaps even a month.
“Maxey is fast and relies on his speed,” Hugh said. “That might be bad for us. What a way to start the season.”
Even if it is the minimum, Joe worries things can go south very quickly for the Sixers without Maxey, especially with Joel Embiid needing rest and building up his strength, and Paul George just working his way back to start the season.
“Let’s say between 2-3 weeks…I don’t know how they get by,” Joe said. “He’s their best player right now.”
