Brewers pitcher Jason Alexander’s debut has Seinfeld fans tweeting George Costanza memes

After five long years in the minor leagues, Jason Alexander will debut for the Brewers, starting Wednesday night’s series finale at Wrigley Field. The 29-year-old earned his call-up by posting a 2.64 ERA over nine appearances including seven starts for Triple-A Nashville. Alexander, whose older brother Scott has pitched for the Dodgers and Royals (he’s currently in the Giants’ farm system), went undrafted out of Menlo College and was ready to accept a high-school coaching position before catching on with the Angels, who signed him to a minor-league deal in 2017.

Overcoming impossible odds to make the big leagues after almost quitting is a remarkable story, but Alexander’s unlikely path to MLB isn’t what resonated with fans on social media. Instead, they called attention to the pitcher’s name, which he shares with actor/comedian Jason Alexander, best known for his portrayal of George Costanza on NBC's iconic sitcom, Seinfeld.

News spread quickly with fans on Twitter using Alexander’s promotion as an excuse to share their favorite Seinfeld memes, referencing George’s professional alias Art Vandelay, his appreciation of modern architecture (or, rather, pretending to appreciate architecture) and, of course, the time he set the team up in a Ramada Inn while working as the Yankees’ traveling secretary.

In all likelihood, Alexander will head back to the minors after Wednesday’s game against the Cubs, though with a good outing, the 6’3” right-hander could buy himself another start or two, especially with ace Brandon Woodruff recently landing on the injured list (he sprained his ankle last Friday). Either way, the Summer of George has officially begun, at least in Milwaukee, where fans nostalgic for the 90s are feeling Seinfeld fever.
