To rewind real quick, during a Q&A session at the annual Halloween event at Knott’s Scary Farm in Buena Park, California. Elvira (aka Cassandra Peterson), was asked about some of her experiences meeting celebrities when someone in the audience shouted out Grande’s name.
The Halloween Queen revealed she had met the Wicked starlet, and recalled the time Ariana brought 20 friends to her show, all of whom took pictures with Elvira, however, when it was Ari’s turn, she denied the photo opp and even left the show early.
"She came and she brought 20 guests, so she wanted 20-21 tickets, we were like...okay" Elvira said. "She gets backstage and she asks if I can take pictures with all of her friends and relatives she brought. I take a picture with every single one of them, I sign autographs for every single one of them. Then I say to her, 'Can we take a photo together?' And she goes, 'No, I don’t really do that.’”
An immediate eruption of boos (and not the Halloween scary kind), came from the crowd in response to the story, followed by one of Elvira’s fellow panelists joking that Grande was possibly “playing the wrong witch” in the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked – with her portraying Glinda the Good Witch, opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Wicked Witch Of The West.
As to be expected the piping-hot, cauldron boiled tea, didn’t stay at Knot Scary Farms. After a clip from the Q&A hit the internet, and immediately went viral, Elvira’s claims picked up an online discourse.
In contrast to the Q&A crowd, many online came to Grande’s defense, with one saying: “That doesn’t seem like her.” Followed by others questioning the story as well, “’Cause when does Ariana not take a picture with someone?,” another commented. Another suggested it could have been a “misunderstanding,” wondering if “Ariana didn’t want people to know she was there for some reason” on the night in question.
Elvira went on to share screenshots of a Parade article about her claim on her Instagram account, along with the clip of her Q&A recollection. “Story time! Context is everything!” she captioned the post.
Responding in the post’s comments section, in hopes of burrying the hatchet and settling any bad blood, Ariana wrote, “I’m so disheartened to see this. I actually don’t even remember getting the chance to meet you because I had an anxiety attack and to my memory, left before the rest of my family,” she wrote.
The singer went on to explain that her meeting with Elvira was “around seven years ago”, at a time when she “was really not great with being in public crowds or loud places. But if I’m misremembering this moment, I sincerely apologize for offending you so,” Grande added. (Note: it seems this incident took place after the 2017 Manchester bombing at one of her concerts, where 22 people were killed).
Ariana went on to add, “Thank you for being so nice to my mom, she told me how lovely you were (she might have different feelings about that now but I’ll talk to her… clearly, we all have our days!),” ending with, “Sending love always. ♡ You’ll always be our queen of Halloween!"
