During the two-hour episode, the top 20 was narrowed down to the top 14 by America’s votes and 4 judges' saves. Katy Perry rocked an abstract, blade-resembling top for the episode which she joked was a representation of the large 6-person cut, as well as to make sure her fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, kept their distance. Little did Perry know, the joke would be on her by the end of the night.
Things took a turn as the last performer of the night, Roman Collins, a 24-year-old worship leader from Long Beach, CA took the stage to sing for his life with James Brown’s “It's A Man's Man's Man's World.” Collins’ soulful rendition ended up being the stand-out performance of the night as it brought the crowd to complete eruption and blew Perry’s top off… literally.
“That song broke my top off,” Perry said gripping her chest before slumping down below the judges table. “I guess it is a woman’s world.”
“Ratings, ratings, rating,” fellow judges Luke and Lionel joked before handing her a cushion from her chair to hold in front of herself.
The malfunction on Idol isn’t the only time Perry’s wardrobe has caused a stir this week. She also got loads of attention as she walked the red carpet with partner, Orlando Bloom at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony, one of the biggest honors in the science world.
As she posed for photos, she could be seen holding a clear, mini purse that contained a rolled up piece of paper reading, “KP6: Top Secret.” The code clearly points to her forthcoming, sixth studio album which she has kept quiet about. Could this be a sign it’s coming soon? We’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, fans can catch Katy Perry on American Idol Sunday and Monday nights at 8PM ET / 7PM CT.
