While chatting with Annie Macmanus and Nick Grimshaw, Smith discussed the personal low they experienced at the start of the year, after a freak skiing mishap left them immobilized for a month. “I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day … I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst,” they explained.
“It’s in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around, and it completely ripped,” Smith added, detailing how some of the after-effects can become a permanent issue when it comes to mobility. “I decided to go down the non-surgical route, but I couldn’t walk for a month on this leg and it was awful, it was the first time I’d ever not been able to move.”
At one point in the conversation, Smith noted that the injury also urged them to “get my s*** together” and prioritize their health and wellbeing more than ever before.
“I was very anxious and had been struggling with anxiety for years, so, I started icing every morning, I started getting into my circadian rhythm,” they explained. “And a big part of that is light exposure to your eyes… in the evening, you stay off your phone and basically try to live by candlelight for last hour before you sleep.”
Also throughout the interview, a decade after it’s release, Sam reflected on their debut album, In The Lonely Hour, recalled singing in pubs at the age of 10 and the moment they decided to become a pop star. Plus Sam shared behind-the-scenes moments of the Met Gala, talked about overcoming trolls, and more.
