There's little doubt that Patrick Mahomes' illustrious run in Kansas City has been marked by the Chiefs' vaunted offensive attack.

But in Week 2's 17-9 win over the Jaguars, it was the Chiefs' defense that led the way, holding a balanced Jacksonville attack to just three goals.

Taken in total with a solid defensive showing in Week 1, it begs the question of whether the Chiefs have assembled their greatest collection of talent on defense since Mahomes arrived in town in 2017.

Mahomes himself seems to agree.

"No doubt, if you look at the first two weeks, and the way our defense has played against two really good offenses, I mean, the sky is the limit," Mahomes told host Carrington Harrison of "The Drive" on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City. "They can be as good as they want to be.

"And I think it's going to take them to continue to work together -- and it started off with a great start, but how can they even improve more? When you combine the D-line, the linebacking group, the DB group, as well as with [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] calling the plays -- being creative -- it's going to be a special defense, and I'm excited for them to continue to build and get even better."

Of course, the difference between the defense from Week 1 to Week 2 was the return of All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones from a preseason holdout that spilled into the regular-season opener.

Mahomes sees the development as a game changer.

"The way he was able to make an impact in the game, coming right off the couch -- I mean, he was working out, and you know he was doing everything, but playing football, being in Jacksonville, that hot, that humid, and being able to be that dominant -- it's truly special. Not only the player, but the person, to know that he was preparing himself to be ready to go whenever his number was called."

Also returning to Chiefs lineup in Week 2 was superstar tight end Travis Kelce, who missed the opener due to a knee ailment.

Right on cue, Mahomes connected with his favorite target for a touchdown, their 47th score as teammates. With the touchdown, Mahomes and Kelce surpassed Chiefs legends Len Dawson and Oliver Taylor for the most by a quarterback and pass-catcher in franchise history.

Mahomes, informed of the new franchise record by Harrison, said it was a huge honor, and renewed his assertion that Kelce is the greatest tight end in NFL history.
