(610 Sports) - At this point in the 2019 season, the Kansas City Chiefs stood at 10-4 and looked like a team that could very well challenge for the organization's first Super Bowl Championship in 50 years, with none of those 4 losses coming by more than a touchdown.
Spoiler alert, that Chiefs team did win the Super Bowl but they didn't make it look easy, coming from behind in each playoff game, including Super Bowl LIV, before coming back to win each of those games.
Fast forward one year, the Chiefs stand at 13-1 after 14 games and join only a handful of teams to have won 22 games in a 23 game stretch, each of whom has made it to at least one Super Bowl. So what makes this team different from last year, how have they managed to win three more games at this point? We asked Patrick Mahomes his thoughts as he sat down with The Drive, on Monday afternoon.
"I know it's kinda cliché but I feel like we're just battle-tested," said Mahomes, when asked what was different about this team that sits at 13-1, than last year's team that eventually went on to win the Super Bowl.
"I mean we've played in every single type of football game it seems like now, and just like yesterday, you see the defense step up and kind of hold it together and keep the offense in the game, for a long part of that game. We know how to win in different ways, we've got a lot of guys that have been in those situations before, and we find ways to win. That's the biggest thing and we're gonna try to carry that momentum into the playoffs."
What this team is doing is obviously special but Patrick Mahomes isn't focusing on setting records or looking ahead.
"I think you have to try and stay in the moment, stay with the process, stay with the every day grind, you can't relax, you have to make sure you prepare yourself every single week to try and win a football game, and that's what we do. I think we have a great group of guys that do that and don't look at the entirety of it but look at the day to day process and knowing that if we going about doing your business the right way, then we can win games and get to where we wanna be at."
