The Royals made some waves on Tuesday night when they announced that they're officially considering several sites for a new stadium, specifically in downtown Kansas City. Rumors of a new downtown stadium have been circulating for a while now, but team owner John Sherman made it official with a lengthy statement released on social media. So what are the next steps? Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas joined The Drive on Wednesday to discuss the announcement, and what the potential of a downtown stadium entails.
"I think that's the pitch the Royals need to make for everybody," Lucas said. "What I said when I was running for mayor – and people get mad at me for saying this sometimes – is that we need a new downtown stadium like I need a new Maserati. It'd be great to have, but I don't know if I can afford it. That's kind of what I think the Royals need to explain ... The Royals need to probably let media go on a walking tour, and see what it's all about. Explain what those costs and renovations would look like."
