Mike Matheny provides update on Salvador Perez's injury

Royals fans got more bad news yesterday, when the team announced that catcher Salvador Perez would be placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained thumb. Perez hadn't been having the year that many expected from him, slashing .206/.239/.397 with a 81 wRC+ and six home runs so far, but his injury obviously weakens an offense that already didn't have much going for them this year. Speaking with 610's Fescoe In The Morning on Wednesday, Royals' manager Mike Matheny explained how the team plans to move forward.

"I think everybody who's a fan understands the value of Salvador Perez," he said. "And I think people who aren't fans of our team are still fans of Salvador Perez just because he's an ambassador for the game. He's special. We know that something like this happens every year. What can we do now to get ahead of something that could potentially be even longer term? Salvy fought it and fought it just because he wants to play. He loves to play. The impact of the team is always, no matter who it is, is unfortunate. The guys hurt for each other, but they hurt for that player. Because they know that guys like Salvy, more than anything, just want to get out and do their part to help us compete."
