Ian Cunningham: Bears are willing to take a 'playmaker' running back high in the NFL Draft

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) – Conventional wisdom has usually led to teams avoiding running backs early in the first round of the NFL Draft in recent years, but this class may buck that concept.

Boise State star running back Ashton Jeanty and North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton lead a strong class at their position. As they hold the 10th overall pick, the Bears have a need at running back, and they’re intrigued by the possibility of adding to the position in the NFL Draft.

The Bears are open to drafting a running back if the circumstances favor that, assistant general manager Ian Cunningham said Tuesday at Halas Hall.

"Yeah, we weigh premium position versus non-premium position,” Cunningham said. “But at the end of the day, it's a playmaker. If we see him in that role, I think you can go take a playmaker that's not at a premium position.”

Jeanty rushed for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns for Boise State in 2024. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist and a leader in the Broncos’ run to the College Football Playoff.

Hampton rushed for 1,660 yards and 15 touchdowns for North Carolina last season. He was a two-time All-American for the Tar Heels.

The Bears are expected to address their offensive line and defensive line in the NFL Draft, but the possibility of landing Jeanty or Hampton in the first round is in play as well.

The NFL Draft will begin Thursday at 7 p.m. CT in Green Bay.
