LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- Bears rookie safety Jaquan Brisker seemed set to start in the season opener. Suddenly, that’s in question.

Brisker recently underwent surgery to repair a hand injury, NFL Media reported Saturday. Bears coach Matt Eberflus didn't offer a timetable for his return but added the hope is Brisker will be ready to play in the season opener against the 49ers on Sept. 11. at Soldier Field.

“We're hopeful that he'll be back,” Eberflus said. “We'll find out here shortly.”

Brisker's injury occurred during the Bears’ preseason game against the Chiefs last Saturday at Soldier Field. He felt pain in his thumb one day later and reported it to the team. Brisker didn't practice this past week or play in Chicago's win at Seattle on Thursday in preseason action.

A second-round pick of the Bears in late April, Brisker is projected to start at safety as a rookie. DeAndre Houston-Carson will likely fill his place at safety in the interim.

In other news, Bears running back Khalil Herbert left practice Saturday on a cart. Eberflus didn't provide an update on his status. It wasn't clear whether Herbert suffered an injury during practice.

The Bears will hold practice Sunday morning at Halas Hall. The team plays its final preseason game next Saturday in Cleveland.
