Bears part ways with several more assistant coaches as Ben Johnson clears the way for new staff hires

(670 The Score) The Bears have parted ways with several more assistant coaches as new head coach Ben Johnson prepares to fill out his staff.

The Bears have elected to not retain defensive line coach Travis Smith, assistant running backs coach Jennifer King, offensive assistant Ryan Griffin and assistant offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling.

Smith had been with the Bears since 2022, when he was hired by former head coach Matt Eberflus. King, Griffin and Houghtailing were each hired in 2024.

The Bears have reached agreements to hire Antwaan Randle El as their assistant head coach/wide receivers coach, J.T. Barrett as their quarterbacks coach and Press Taylor as their passing game coordinator. The team hasn't yet officially confirmed those appointments. Tulane offensive line coach Dan Roushar is a strong candidate to take the same position in Chicago.

The Bears have officially announced the hirings of offensive coordinator Declan Doyle and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen while confirming special teams coordinator Richard Hightower was retained.

Bears tight ends coach Jim Dray remains the lone position coach from the Eberflus era presently on staff, though his future isn't clear.

The Bears are expected to announce Johnson's full coaching staff in February.
