After he asked to be dealt, Bears retain Jaylon Johnson as trade deadline passes

(670 The Score) Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is staying put in Chicago, at least for the time being.

Johnson wasn't dealt by the Bears on Tuesday as the 3 p.m. trade deadline passed. That development transpired after Johnson requested a trade out of Chicago and was granted permission to explore options for a move. Johnson and the Bears had been negotiating a contract extension in recent days, with discussions held over the weekend, but that dialogue didn't produce an agreement.

After having their request for a trade granted late Monday night, Johnson's representation explored potential deals Tuesday, but the hopes didn't come to fruition. The Bears wanted a second-round pick for Johnson in a trade, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported.

Johnson, 24, is playing in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. A second-round pick of the Bears in 2020, Johnson has three interceptions over 45 career games.
Two of those, including a pick-six, came recently in the Bears' win against the Raiders on Oct. 22. Johnson ranks No. 3 among all cornerbacks in the NFL in Pro Football Focus' grades this season.

Johnson has spoken candidly about his desire to reach a contract extension and remain with the Bears, though he has also acknowledged the importance of being paid like one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL.

"I'm looking for respect and security at the end of the day," Johnson said last week.

The Bears had a busy Tuesday, as they made a trade to acquire pass rusher Montez Sweat from the Commanders in exchange for a second-round pick.

Sweat, 27, has 6.5 sacks in eight games this season. Like Johnson, Sweat is playing the final year of his rookie contract and set to become a free agent this offseason.

Sweat's addition marked the second straight year that the Bears parted with a second-round pick at the trade deadline. In 2022, the Bears acquired receiver Chase Claypool from the Steelers in exchange for their own second-round pick. That selection became the No. 32 overall slot in the draft. The Claypool acquisition didn't work out, as he failed to produce in Chicago and the Bears traded him to the Dolphins earlier in October.

The Bears (2-6) visit the Saints (4-4) on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
