Bears rookie QB Caleb Williams is sharp in preseason debut

(670 The Score) Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams' preseason debut was a glimpse of what Chicago hopes to see more of.

Williams was 4-of-7 for 95 yards while leading the Bears' starting offense through two series and 18 plays against the Bills on Saturday. He also added a 13-yard rush as the Bears compiled 142 total yards of offense on those two series. Kicker Cairo Santos capped both drives with field goals in Chicago's eventual 33-6 win.

Williams connected on a 12-yard strike to receiver DJ Moore for his first completion, then hit running back D'Andre Swift on a short pass for a 42-yard catch-and-run.

Williams' top highlight came on a 26-yard connection to tight end Cole Kmet, a play in which he evaded pressure in the pocket and then made a throw on the move.

The Bears' plan was for Williams to play approximately 15 plays after he sat out of the team's preseason opener.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus kept the goal simple for Williams entering his first exhibition action.

"Just more of what we see now, where he is, in terms of the progress and this is his first time in live action," Eberflus said last week. "He's been getting a lot of good reps with our one defense so I think it will feel similar to him, but I really feel that when it's live there in the pocket, to be able to move, maneuver in the pocket, ride the pocket, escape on the outside, B gaps, all those things, be able to deliver the ball, keep your eyes downfield and really just the operation of it. Get in and out of the huddle. No pre-snap penalties. Clean operation."

The Bears turned to backup quarterback Tyson Bagent in the second quarter after removing Williams from the game.

Williams and the Bears return to practice Sunday at Halas Hall.
