Sources: Bears won't retain interim coach Thomas Brown, defensive coordinator Eric Washington, 3 others

(670 The Score) New Bears head coach Ben Johnson on Thursday informed several coaches from former head coach Matt Eberflus' staff that they won't be retained.

The Bears won't retain interim head coach Thomas Brown, defensive coordinator Eric Washington, interim offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph and offensive line coach/run game coordinator Chris Morgan, sources said. The Athletic first reported the news.

Brown took over as the Bears' interim head coach on Nov. 29 following Eberflus' firing. He was 1-4 in his five-game tenure, with the Bears losing the first four of those contests before beating the rival Packers, 24-22, in their season finale on Jan. 5 at Lambeau Field.

Washington was Chicago's defensive coordinator for one season. The Bears regressed significantly on defense in 2024, finishing 27th in total defense.

Beatty and Joseph were each hired by the Bears in early 2024 and spent one season in Chicago. Beatty became the interim offensive coordinator when Brown assumed the role of interim head coach.

Morgan was one of Eberflus' first hires back in early 2022. He took on much of the blame for the Bears' struggles on the offensive line. Quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times as a rookie in 2024.

More changes to the Bears' coaching staff are expected as Johnson prepares to fill out this staff with his own hires.
