Cole Kmet: Reports of Bears veterans pushing for Tyson Bagent to start over Caleb Williams are false

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) – In a week of reckoning at Halas Hall, the Bears aren’t making any changes at the quarterback position.

Bears rookie Caleb Williams will remain as the team's starting quarterback amid a couple reports that veteran players had asked the coaching staff to consider turning to backup Tyson Bagent. That drama accompanied a tumultuous week in which the Bears fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron on Tuesday as the team rides a three-game losing streak.

There have been no requests from Bears players to make a change at quarterback, veteran tight end Cole Kmet said Wednesday.

"We’re just trying to find solutions to help (Williams) out first and foremost," Kmet said. "Because you see when he gets going, it is special. And we want to find ways to make him comfortable, make him flow and let him go do his thing.

"We got the ultimate faith in him. We want him to play fast, play free and play almost like a kid out there, have fun."

After firing Waldron, the Bears promoted passing game coordinator Thomas Brown to the play-calling role, meaning Williams is on his second offensive coordinator since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in late April.

"It’s tough," Williams said. "Just because you work for however many months it’s been. I kinda knew Shane before being drafted here because of the process and stuff. Trying to build that relationship, building that relationship, (then) the guy you’ve been trying to get on the same page with isn’t here anymore."

Williams has thrown for 1,785 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions in nine starts this season. The Bears rank 30th in the NFL in total offense and 24th in scoring.

The Bears' struggles are especially concerning given their investment in Williams, who hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in five of his nine starts this season.

As they look forward, the Bears are offering their support behind Williams as they make changes on offense.

"He's going out there busting his butt, trying to learn everything at once and the defenses are throwing a lot at him," top receiver DJ Moore said. "So, you can’t really be mad at him. You just got to still back him. Whatever he’s doing, he’s going to get better at, and he we’re with him.”

The Bears’ (4-5) will host the Packers (6-3) on Sunday at Soldier Field.
