Declan Doyle: Ben Johnson is setting the foundation for the Bears' offense

(670 The Score) New Bears head coach Ben Johnson promised to build his offense from the ground up. That process is well underway.

The Bears are at work with their offseason program, and Johnson is starting to install his scheme. With that also comes the need to understand the player personnel in place.

Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle sees Johnson doing well in setting a foundation.

“It starts at the top with Ben,” Doyle told reporters Thursday at Halas Hall. “He's done a really good job of finding people that he has respect for, people that he feels like they're going to add to the vision for where we want to take this. But it's been great. He's set a standard and he's held us to that standard. Obviously, a lot of different experience from everybody in the offensive staff as well as throughout the building. Really doing a good job of trying to narrow down, 'OK, we all have this experience, but what do the 2025 Bears look like?' And trying to hone in on that.

“We really want to just lay the foundation, introduce these guys to a lot of scheme, see what they can handle. We want it to be stressful early. And then from there, we're going to shape it to fit our players the best. Because to your point, when the players aren't in here, it's not like you can just say, 'Hey, we're going to get up and run wide zone' and that's what we're going to be if your guys aren't good at running that. I don't think that's good coaching. So, it's constantly evolving. Ben is very much into being able to morph the offense to fit the player. And that's really the plan here moving forward.”

The 28-year-old Doyle was hired by Johnson in late January as a first-time offensive coordinator. Johnson, who previously served as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, plans to call plays for the Bears on offense.

The Bears are presently working through the first phase of their offseason program.
