Caleb Williams has always had the 'it factor,' his high school coach says

(670 The Score) As the Bears prepare to make a franchise-altering quarterback decision this offseason, they'll have to measure incumbent starter Justin Fields against prized prospect Caleb Williams.

A standout at USC and the Heisman Trophy winner in 2022, Williams is an undeniable talent as he's headed into the NFL, but the Bears must also gain a sense of his makeup and what could ultimately define his career.

Williams' former high school head coach Randy Trivers of Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. told the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Friday that Williams has the right combination of tools and character to be successful.

"Caleb was ultra-talented as a young youth league player," Trivers said. "Seeing him as a prospect, you just knew this guy had velocity and accuracy and great feet and athleticism beyond his years. But you don't know for sure how he's going to respond in competitive situations at that next level. That's where he really, really excelled in the moments of truth, as they say. A lot of times, you get guys with talent and physical skills but they just lack that 'it' factor or whatever you have in your heart and above the neck that make it so that when it is that moment of truth, you can be triumphant. He was able to show that time and time again as a player in our program."

As a sophomore in high school, Williams led Gonzaga to a state championship in 2018, winning the game by throwing a 68-yard Hail Mary as time expired. He spent the 2021 season at Oklahoma, then transferred to USC, where he has been a standout performer for the past two seasons.

Williams is projected to be the top pick in the NFL Draft, where the Bears hold the No. 1 overall selection.
