(670 The Score) Entering play Tuesday, the Cubs boast MLB's top scoring offense as they're averaging 6.0 runs per game. They're also at or near the top of MLB in a number of other key offensive categories.
On the Rahimi & Harris Show on Tuesday, Cubs left fielder Ian Happ credited the team's success to a collective mindset shared by all.
“I feel like when you’re in a lineup like that where you know it’s not just on you – the team’s going to get it done regardless,” Happ said. “If you have a six-, seven-pitch at-bat and you don’t get the result that you want, then you know that you’ve done your job to help the next guy. Or you go up there and you’ve seen all these pitches, you’ve given the team a chance to get a look at him. Or you’re in a situation where, ‘Hey, I know that we didn’t score this inning when I got on base, but I know that the next time through, we’re going to get the job done.’ It’s just this contagious belief that we’re going to score runs and we’re going to do it in a bunch of different ways.
“If the wind is blowing in, we’re not afraid to safety squeeze, steal some bases and do that. If the wind is blowing out, we have the ability to get the ball in the air and hit some home runs. Just to do it different ways if we don’t have a great day against a starter, to know that we’re going to get to the bullpen. Just things like that where you feel like there’s this contagious belief that we’re going to put up runs, whether it’s in the first inning or the ninth.”
The Cubs earned a 9-2 win over the Giants on Monday at Wrigley Field. The two teams will play the second game of their series Tuesday evening. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. CT. You can hear the game on 670 The Score or the Audacy app. Pregame coverage starts at 6:05 p.m.
