(Audacy) In his pre-draft evaluation, scouts salivated over quarterback Jay Cutler’s 6-foot-3 frame and elite throwing arm, but didn’t they say much about his intangibles. Turns out, follow-through was perhaps never one of Cutler's strengths, as he flaked on receiver Brandon Marshall’s wedding, a slight that apparently took Marshall years to get over.
“He once told me he was going to come to my wedding, and I look out in the aisle and there was no Jay Cutty,” Marshall told Kay Adams, who was also stood up by Cutler after agreeing to appear on Up & Adams, which airs daily on FanDuel TV. “I didn’t talk to him for another three years until I got traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Chicago Bears.”

Put off by Cutler’s no-show, Marshall avoided him until he couldn’t anymore, finally reuniting in Chicago in 2012 as Bears teammates after three years apart. The two had been teammates in Denver from 2006-'08. While Cutler’s sourpuss stylings certainly weren’t for everyone, some fans actually found his aloofness charming, culminating in the now iconic “Smokin’ Jay” meme.
“Two nights before the wedding, ‘Yeah, I’m going to be there, I’m coming,’” Marshall said of his hard-to-pin-down former teammate, naively believing Cutler, the Bears’ all-time passing leader with 23,443 career yards, would actually follow through on a social obligation. “Tony Scheffler came. All the boys came. We’re having a good time. He didn’t make the party. He’ll make it tomorrow. Nope.”
