(670 The Score) The Bears opened the regular season with eight players voted as team captains. That still remains the case.
In a 30-12 loss to the Vikings on Monday night, Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson didn't have a captain’s C patch on his jersey, though interim head coach Thomas Brown clarified afterward that Johnson remains a captain.
“He’s definitely a captain,” Brown said. “He’s in every captain’s meeting. That’s a guy that speaks for our group a lot. Actually, he did a really good job (on) Saturday’s practice after, we kind of broke it down with him in the middle, and he did a great job delivering a timely message. So, he’s definitely a captain on and off the field for us.”
Johnson was unaware of his captain’s patch missing during the game, he told reporters postgame at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Ahead of the season, the Bears named eight team captains, an unusually large number by NFL standards. Most teams elect four team captains, as the Bears have in the past. Their eight captains are Johnson, quarterback Caleb Williams, tight end Cole Kmet, tight end Marcedes Lewis, receiver DJ Moore, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, linebacker T.J. Edwards and safety Kevin Byard.
In taking over as interim head coach in late November, Brown said he had no intention to alter the captaincy.
The Bears (4-10) have three games remaining this season.
