(670 The Score) New Bears safety Kevin Byard has high expectations for the team’s secondary in 2024.
“That’s definitely the goal – I think at a minimum, be top five (in the NFL),” Byard said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Tuesday morning live from Bears camp at Halas Hall. “When you have a good secondary, you always have to have a mix of veteran leadership but also a lot of younger guys coming into their own like Tyrique (Stevenson), Kyler (Gordon) and Jaquan (Brisker).
And obviously, Jaylon (Johnson) has been around the block a while. He finally got his recognition and due making his first Pro Bowl last year with the plays that he made.”
Byard is the lone new starter in the Bears’ secondary after signing with Chicago following seven-and-a-half seasons with Tennessee and a half-season with Philadelphia. He believes his transition is going well early in training camp.
“Just as a secondary, I think we’re gelling really well together … but we got to continue to work,” Byard said. “At the end of the day, during the season, there’s going to be ups and downs, but I think as far as the secondary, we have to be one of the rocks of this team, one of the rocks of the defense because we all know when you make a mistake on the back end, it’s usually big plays and touchdowns.”
