(670 The Score) As the Bears have bolstered their roster with new additions recently, another priority is to keep one of their own secured for the long term.
Bears nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon is a strong candidate to receive a contract extension this offseason, and he’s interested in exploring that possibility any time.
“I love Chicago, I love everything about it,” Gordon said Wednesday while accepting the Ed Block Courage Award at a banquet in Des Plaines. “The people, the history, the team, community. This is where God is telling me to be, this is where I will be. It’s where I want to be. As far as an extension, we’ll see what happens. I’ve got no control over that, but God willing.
“It’s just all about doing it right. I’m not really pressed for time, whether it’s here now or later. I think it’s just about doing right and being fair about it.”
A second-round pick of the Bears in 2022, Gordon has been a key piece of the team’s defensive identity. He has 207 tackles and five interceptions in 42 games across his first three NFL seasons.
New Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen recently pointed to the 25-year-old Gordon as an instrumental piece in his plans.
“Kyler Gordon, I think, is an outstanding nickel player,” Allen said. “I have a vision for how we can utilize him. I think the foundation for what we want to do is there.”
Gordon was selected by the Bears with the hope that he could fit well as the team’s nickelback. He has embraced that position through three seasons.
Gordon was the first draft selection made by Bears general manager Ryan Poles, who was hired in early 2022. Now, the Bears can work to lock Gordon into their future, though he isn't worried about the situation in any way.
“I want to say indifferent about it,” Gordon said. “Like, I’d be extremely happy if it happened now. If it didn’t happen, I’ve still got to go to work regardless. So, whatever it may be, my attitude’s going to be positive regardless.”
