Luke Getsy: Bears' offensive breakthroughs are part of 'natural growth'

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) — On Sept. 20, Bears quarterback Justin Fields publicly called upon his coaches to help him play more freely within the team's scheme, and Chicago's offense began to find its form soon after. But in the mind of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, Fields' comment and the recent success are unrelated.

Getsy believes the Bears’ increased offensive production is the simple byproduct of time on task – not the result of overhauling the scheme in any way for Fields. As the Bears struggled in their 0-3 start, Getsy expressed confidence that his offense was "close" to breaking out. That has since come to fruition.

“We’ve been really consistent,” Getsy said Thursday. “We have a great relationship in the sense that we’ve been able to talk about things since the day we got together. I think it’s just natural growth. And we’re going to stick to making sure we get a little bit better each and every day.”

The Bears have scored 28 and 40 points, respectively, in their last two games after totaling 47 points in their first three contests. Fields has enjoyed the best two-game stretch of his young career, going a combined 43-of-64 for 617 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception in that span.

In the Bears’ 40-20 win over the Commanders on Oct. 5, Fields connected for three touchdown passes to top receiver DJ Moore.

Fields is now tied for second in the NFL with 11 touchdown passes in five games, while Moore is tied for the league lead with five touchdown receptions. The Bears are third in the NFL in explosive plays of 20 yards or more.

After their sudden offensive surge, the Bears rank 12th in scoring.

“Everybody on the team knows their role,” Fields said. “Everybody on the team knows that DJ’s our No. 1 receiver and wherever the chips fall, they fall. But he’s the No. 1 receiver. (Darnell Mooney) is going to get the ball. Cole (Kmet) is going to get the ball. Of course, we always want to get those guys involved. Just spread the love.”
