(670 The Score) When newly tabbed Bears head coach Ben Johnson was an assistant with the Dolphins, he first met longtime NFL coach Mike Martz. The two developed a connection.
Since then, Martz has followed Johnson’s ascension closely and believes that he'll do well in leading the Bears forward. Johnson was an assistant in Miami from 2012-'18 before moving to Detroit, where he spent six seasons, including the last three as the Lions' offensive coordinator.
“Players in the NFL, if they know that you know it – you can help them get better and help them win – then they’re all ears,” Martz told the Spiegel & Holmes Show on Monday. “Then you got them completely. The first few weeks or so, a player gets with a coach, they figure him out pretty quick, and they either listen to him kind of, they’re all in or they’re all out. It’s just that easy. He’s going to capture them right away because he knows what he’s talking about and he’s going to make them all better.
“I think he’s a once-in-a-generation kind of coach. They just don’t come around very often like him. They got this one right. I’m just over the moon on this one. It’s great to see Chicago have something exciting happen to them like this.”
The Bears reached an agreement Monday to hire Johnson. A press conference is expected to be held later this week.
