(670 The Score) The Bears on Monday interviewed James Bettcher for their defensive coordinator vacancy, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported.

Bettcher, 42, was the defensive coordinator for the Cardinals from 2015-’17 and the Giants from 2018-’19. Bettcher sat out the 2020 season from coaching after he wasn’t retained when the Giants hired new coach Joe Judge. He previously served as the outside linebackers coach for the Colts and Cardinals as well.

Under Bettcher’s guidance, the Cardinals ranked No. 5 in total defense in 2015, No. 2 in 2016 and No. 6 in 2017. Bettcher didn’t have much success with the Giants, who ranked 24th in total defense in 2018 and 25th in 2019.

The Bears are searching for their third defensive coordinator in the past four seasons following Chuck Pagano’s retirement last week. The Bears have also asked the Cowboys permission to interview Dallas senior defensive assistant George Edwards, who was the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator from 2014-’19.
