(Audacy) Free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III appearing in a charity event might help him get another crack in the NFL.
Griffin, who hasn’t played since he was with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, took part in the “Run Rich Run” event hosted by Rich Eisen, where Griffin ran a 40-yard dash.
His time? An impressive 4.48.
That was enough to get him some NFL interest, as the 2012 second overall pick – who currently works as an analyst for ESPN – said he has been getting some calls from NFL teams in response to the time. Griffin is only 32 and during his time with the Ravens proved to be a serviceable backup.
While Griffin didn’t reveal which specific teams have touched base, he mentioned on the “Rich Eisen Show” on Tuesday that there are three teams he believes would be great landing spots for him.
"I’ve been reached out to from a plethora of teams," Griffin said. "Going back home to Texas with the Dallas Cowboys, I know a lot of Washington fans don’t want to hear that, but that would be a great situation for me. The Atlanta Falcons being there with (Marcus) Mariota and (Desmond) Ridder would be a great situation for me. Going to Chicago with Justin FIelds to try to help as much as I possibly can in that quarterback room would also be a great situation.
“I’m happy with what I’m doing (at ESPN), but if an opportunity did arise, I do know that they understand that I still have that desire to play and I would go do it.”
You could make a case for Griffin on any of those three teams.
The Cowboys have a clear starter in Dak Prescott, but their backups – Will Grier, Cooper Rush and Ben DiNucci – have little NFL experience.
The Falcons Mariota to keep the seat warm until Ridder is ready, and Feleipe Franks is on the roster as well. Ridder very well might be a multi-year project though, so having Griffin around to compete with him and Franks for the second-string job this season wouldn’t be the worst idea.
The Bears have given the keys to Fields and have Trevor Siemian and Ryan Willis as their backups. The Bears also recently released veteran Nick Foles, so they could potentially look at Griffin as a cheaper option to be a veteran backup.
Ultimately, Griffin still being fast doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll land another job. But he’s clearly willing to be a veteran presence in a depth role, and teams could do much worse than taking a flier on him.
