Robert Mays shares reasons for optimism about Bears' offense

(670 The Score) The Bears’ offensive performance was inarguably awful in their season opener Sunday, but Robert Mays of The Athletic didn’t think it was as bad as the box score indicated.

The Bears managed just 148 yards of offense as rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was 14-of-29 for 93 yards through the air, but Mays liked some of what he saw from Williams, as he explained on the Bernstein & Holmes Show on Wednesday.

“Maybe this is just me trying to lean into some Week 1 optimism, but I think it’s not nearly as bad as the final box score showed,” Mays said. “The offensive line concerns are definitely something we can talk about. I think that’s probably the realest element (of concern) here. But some of the things that we saw from Caleb Williams and what that final stat line is …his down-to-down play was significantly better than that final stat line would lead you to believe.

“His eyes are going to the right place. He’s playing on time for the most part, when he’s allowed to, when there’s not instant pressure. The ball is going to where it probably should go. There were just weird accuracy issues.”
