(670 The Score) Bears general manager Ryan Poles has been pleased with second-year quarterback Caleb Williams’ progress during training camp even as he has had some rough practices.
“For a young quarterback, you can see his progress that he’s made throughout training camp and really over the last two years, it’s night and day just in terms of the operation,” Poles said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Thursday morning. “And there’s still room to improve. But he’s taken ownership of that, is being open to being coached hard and he continues to get better. With young players, it’s usually two or three steps forward, maybe a step back, two or three steps forward, a step back, kind of that natural progression as we’ve gone through camp. But I love to see him continue to improve with the operation, and he’ll have the opportunity to do that here with the first preseason game that he’s going to play in.”
Williams and most of the Bears’ starters sat out of Chicago’s 24-24 tie against Miami in the team’s preseason opener last Sunday. They’re scheduled to play when the Bears host the Bills this upcoming Sunday in their second preseason game.
The Bears haven’t yet decided whether Williams and the starters will play in the team’s preseason finale against the Chiefs on Aug. 22. That decision will hinge on how they fare against the Bills and in practice over the next two week-plus.
“We’re still pretty open to how we’re going to approach the Kansas City (game),” Poles said.
