Craig Counsell on Cubs' standing in the wild-card race: 'We're still in it'

(670 The Score) Cubs manager Craig Counsell knows his club is in a precarious position as it relates to the playoff race, but he and his players are nonetheless holding onto the belief that they can make a late push and make something more of what’s been a disappointing season.

As Counsell framed it, the Cubs are one strong stretch from really getting into the mix. Entering play Wednesday, the Cubs were 5.5 games behind the Braves in the race for the final National League wild-card berth.
Complicating matters, of course, is that the Mets and Giants also sit between the Cubs and the Braves.

“We’re still in it,” Counsell said in an interview with Matt Spiegel and Gabe Ramirez on 670 The Score on Wednesday afternoon. “I don’t know if we’ve made a ton of progress, but we’re still in it. And that means we still have a good stretch of baseball ahead of us to be righted. So that’s inspiring.
You use that. On a daily basis, it’s different – it’s just do your job today. But we know we’re a good streak from behind right there in it. That’s how you keep going. It helps everybody to keep going for sure. That’s how we’ve got to operate.”

The Cubs (62-64) host the Tigers (61-65) on Wednesday evening at Wrigley Field in the second game of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on 670 The Score and the Audacy app in the Chicagoland area. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 p.m.
