Cubs acquire catcher Matt Thaiss from Angels
(670 The Score) The Cubs have acquired catcher Matt Thaiss in a trade with the Angels, the club announced Wednesday.
Thaiss, 29, hit .204 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 57 games for the Angels in 2024. A lefty hitter, Thaiss has hit .208 with 22 homers in 245 career games across six MLB seasons. He was a first-round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
In return, the Cubs sent the Angels cash considerations. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago designated right-hander Trey Wingenter for assignment. Wingenter, 30, posted a 3.00 ERA in six innings for the Cubs in 2024 after the team claimed him off waivers from the Red Sox in August.
The trade marked the Cubs' second acquisition of the day. Earlier Wednesday, Chicago acquired reliever Eli Morgan from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Class-A outfielder Alfonsin Rosario.
