(670 The Score) The Cubs are looking to improve their roster by making moves on the trade market ahead of the deadline on July 31, but they could also get internal help as well.
Catch Miguel Amaya (oblique) and right-hander Javier Assad (oblique) are each expected to return in August, general manager Carter Hawkins told the Rahimi & Harris Show on Friday.
“It’ll be really, really nice to have them back,” Hawkins told the Rahimi & Harris Show on Friday. “Our catching group has done great as Miggy has been out. Obviously, Reese McGuire has been outstanding in terms of his ability to be our second catcher. Carson (Kelly) has had just a heck of a year. And obviously, the more starting pitching you can have, the better, and Javy that has done it before and pitched in multiple roles will be great to have.”
Amaya and Assad are each nearing rehab stints in the minor leagues, Hawkins said.
Amaya was hitting .280 with four home runs and 25 RBIs before suffering an oblique injury in late May. Assad hasn't pitched this season while also dealing with an oblique injury. He has a career 3.40 ERA over 70 appearances (47 starts) in the big leagues.
The Cubs open a three-game series against the Red Sox on Friday at Wrigley Field. First pitch is set for 1:20 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on 670 The Score and the Audacy app. Pregame coverage starts at 12:45 p.m.
