(670 The Score) The Cubs have signed veteran catcher Robinson Chirinos to a one-year deal, they announced Monday.
Chirinos, 37, was recently released by the Yankees and hasn’t played a game at the big league level this season. He hit .219 with one homer, five RBIs and a .617 OPS in 12 games for the Mets in 2020. For his career, he’s a .231 hitter with a .755 OPS.
Chirinos will be relied upon to be the backup to starting catcher Willson Contreras. He’s set to be available when the Cubs host the Phillies at Wrigley Field on Monday evening.
A Venezuela native, Chirinos originally signed with the Cubs in 2000 and spent about a decade in their minor league system.
In a corresponding move, Chicago designated catcher Taylor Gushue for assignment.
