The White Sox already have made a few big moves.
And while they've moved the majority of their most tradable assets, that doesn’t mean they’re done dealing ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
The White Sox have until 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday to complete their firesale. Thus far, they’ve sent Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the Angels, then they traded Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly a few miles up the road to the Dodgers. Kendall Graveman was the fifth pitcher to go, getting traded to the Astros.
That’s already a pretty active deadline. But with other trade chips still at Chicago’s disposal, Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman said Monday on the Mully & Haugh Show that the White Sox could keep making moves.
“Yeah, I think they still have some potential possibilities," Heyman said. "Obviously, they were aggressive early and traded so many pitchers. They’re experienced at this, so they kind of know what they want and they kind of know what can be done, and they did it.
“I do think (Kenyan) Middleton is a guy they can trade. Not hearing of much interest in Tim Anderson based on the season he’s having. He’s been better lately, but we’ll see, could be. Grandal, obviously not having a great year either, but Texas is pretty desperate right now in the catching department and some other teams may be as well.”
If the White Sox shift gears to trading position players, then they have to decide whether they want to go the offloading rentals or orchestrating blockbusters route, or some combination of both.
Most of the White Sox’ rentals are depressed assets at this point, so getting a return of substance likely would be predicated on moving someone like Luis Robert Jr. That’s a nuclear decision though, one that Chicago might not think is worth it.
“There are still a few things they can do right now around the edges,” Heyman said. “In terms of the biggest pieces, I haven’t heard any buzz on anyone like a (Yoan) Moncada or anybody like that lately. So I’m thinking unlikely. Other teams are saying – obviously the biggest would be Robert not going anywhere, and (Dylan) Cease, I also believe is not going anywhere. Other teams are saying the White Sox just don’t want to trade Cease.
“Officially, there’s no one untouchable. Like any experienced GM, Rick Hahn is not saying anybody is untouchable, but I think those guys are pretty close to untouchable at this point. More likely Middleton, Grandal, the relievers at this point for the White Sox.”
