(670 The Score) White Sox ace Lucas Giolito exited early in the team's season opener Friday due to abdominal tightness in his left side, the team said.
Giolito was dominant in throwing four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six and walking two in the White Sox's eventual 5-4 loss to the Tigers. He'll be further evaluated, the White Sox said.
"He just felt a little tug in there," manager Tony La Russa told reporters postgame. "He didn't want to take any chances."
La Russa was then asked what his level of concern was.
"I'm concerned because he felt something, and he was smart to not go back out there," La Russa said. "But who knows what else is going to happen. We really have a lot riding on him getting checked and seeing what it is."
The White Sox led 3-0 over the Tigers when Giolito left. Left-hander Bennett Sousa came on in relief of Giolito.
