(670 The Score) Northwestern has suspended football coach Pat Fitzgerald for two weeks following an investigation into alleged hazing within the program, as 670 The Score host Mike Mulligan first reported Friday.
Fitzgerald will begin serving the suspension Friday, and it will be unpaid.
The investigation found the claims to be credible, the school said. There wasn’t evidence that Fitzgerald and his coaching staff knew about the hazing conduct, but there were “significant opportunities to discover and report” the hazing, the school said in an executive summary. The full report of the investigation is confidential, the school said.
“I was very disappointed when I heard about the allegations of hazing on our football team,” Fitzgerald said in a statement. “Although I was not aware of the alleged incidents, I have spoken to university officials, and they informed me of a two-week suspension, effective immediately.
“Northwestern football prides itself on producing not just athletes, but fine young men with character befitting the program and our university. We hold our student-athletes and our program to the highest standards. We will continue to work to exceed those standards moving forward.”
The Wildcats are coming off a 1-11 season. Fitzgerald is 110-101 in 17 years leading Northwestern.
