New Jersey bettor places $25,000 wager on Josh Allen to win MVP

We know the Seahawks are finally letting Russell Wilson cook, but the Seahawks superstar isn’t the only QB lighting up defenses these days. Josh Allen has quickly ascended to star status in Buffalo, putting on a herculean display with seven touchdowns (six passing, one rushing) and over 700 passing yards through his first two games.

Coming off a career-high 415 passing yards—the most by a Bill since Drew Bledsoe hung 417 on the Raiders in 2002—Allen’s legion of supporters seems to be growing by the day. Even Rams Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey, who previously dismissed Allen as “trash,” has come around, acknowledging the third-year signal-caller’s rapid improvement.

How full is the Allen bandwagon right now? To give you an idea, one particularly adventurous bettor put $25,000 on Allen to win NFL MVP. The 24-year-old currently stands as a +2500 longshot at Atlantic City-based Borgata Sportsbook, where the bet was placed. Ten players hold better odds with frontrunner Wilson leading the way at +350. The irony, of course, is that Wilson, despite a laundry list of accolades (seven Pro Bowls, one Super Bowl), has never received a single MVP vote in his eight-year Seattle tenure.

Allen, the NFL’s current leader in passing yards with 727, faced much longer odds before the season started with some sportsbooks handicapping him as high as +5000. As dominant as Allen has looked in the early going, regression seems all but inevitable given the low level of competition he’s faced with soft matchups against the Jets and Dolphins, neither of whom are expected to compete for a playoff spot. However, if Allen’s storybook season culminates in an MVP Award—an honor no Bill has garnered since running back Thurman Thomas in 1991—the payout would be enormous ($650,000!).

Allen will try to stay hot Sunday when Buffalo hosts the undefeated Rams at Bills Stadium in Orchard Park.
