It's not the tournament Memphis was hoping to get into when they started last week. A #3 seed in the National Invitation Tournament is certainly an improvement on last year. The NIT is also a solid start for Penny Hardway, as the city awaits a likely Top 10 recruiting class and high expectations for 2019-20.
Third-seeded Memphis (21-13) will host sixth-seeded San Diego (21-14) on Tuesday at FedExForum in the NIT, ending four-year run with no postseason appearance. Winner likely to get second-seeded Creighton in second round.
