Tigers Take Down Arkansas State, 37-3
JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Memphis Football team earned its first road victory of the season on Saturday night in Jonesboro, Ark., defeating Arkansas State, 37-3, at Centennial Bank Stadium.
Once again, the Tigers (2-0) were dominant defensively, causing four turnovers and not letting the opponent score a touchdown for the second-straight game. Last week, Bethune-Cookman had two defensive scores.
Offensively, quarterback Seth Henigan completed 21-of-29 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 26 yards and another score. Wide receivers Joseph Scates and Tauskie Dove each had a receiving touchdown against the Red Wolves (0-2), while running back Ke’Travion Hargrove ran it in from 17 yards on the game’s final play.
Defensive back DJ Bell had a career-high six tackles and an interception returned 36 yards for a touchdown for Memphis, while linebacker Chandler Martin finished with a team-best seven stops to go with 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Defensive lineman Derick Hunter Jr. posted 1.5 sacks on the night, while Jarra Anderson had one. Defensive back Cameron Smith had three tackles and an interception, while DeAgo Brumfield totaled four tackles, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble and five pass breakups.
With the victory, Memphis has won five-straight in the series against Arkansas State and the three points allowed by the Tigers’ defense is the fewest since a 45-3 win on Oct. 9, 1993.
The Tigers will return home to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium to host Navy on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. Full coverage all week on 92.9 FM ESPN, Memphis' Sports Station.
