MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's basketball team is headed on a foreign basketball tour this August to the Dominican Republic.
The Tigers will head to the beautiful Casa de Campo Resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic for a seven-day trip from Aug. 1-7. Memphis will train and play three games during its stay as it prepares for the 2023-24 season.
Highlighting the week's slate will be an Aug. 2 matchup with the Dominican Republic National Team at 6:30 pm CT in Santo Domingo.
Memphis will then play a pair of games against Dominican Select Teams on Aug. 4 and Aug. 6, where no tip times or locations have been set at this time.
"I'm excited to take another foreign trip with my team," head coach Penny Hardaway said. "Four years ago, we went to the Bahamas and it gave us an opportunity to bond and grow as a team. Now, this summer I'm hoping that the Dominican Republic does the same thing for this year's team.
"It will be a combination of business and pleasure. I hope to see our fans there."
NCAA rules allow for a foreign tour by an intercollegiate team once every four academic years. Memphis' tour is managed by Complete Sports Management, a sports marketing firm which annually manages trips for collegiate teams across the globe.
This will be Memphis' first foreign tour with CSM, but the two parties began a relationship in 2020 when the Tigers competed at the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
"CSM is excited to work with the Memphis men's basketball program again," said Lea Miller-Tooley, CEO of CSM. "The foreign tour to La Romana, Dominican Republic will be a great opportunity for the team to experience a different country and start as preparation for next season."
