Christian Brothers University is preparing to move from NCAA Division II to the NAIA, beginning with the 2027-28 athletic season.

CBU has applied to join the NAIA’s Mid-South Conference, with final approval expected at the NAIA’s September 27-29 fall meeting. NAIA stands for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The university says the move is designed to provide more roster opportunities, reduce travel and missed class time, and create greater access to conference and national championships. CBU will remain in the Gulf South Conference and compete as an NCAA Division II member during the 2026-27 season before making the transition.

CBU would join the NAIA as a member of the Mid-South Conference with the following colleges:

  • Bethel University (McKenzie, Tennessee)
  • Campbellsville University (Campbellsville, Kentucky)
  • Cumberland University (Lebanon, Tennessee)
  • University of the Cumberlands (Williamsburg, Kentucky)
