Trey Wingo reported at 2:52 p.m. ET on Monday that Aaron Rodgers to the Jets was “done.”
It was nearly two days later that Rodgers confirmed his intention is to go to the Jets.
Ultimately, Wingo’s reporting was right. Nothing has been put down in ink yet, but it’s clear that when Jets brass flew out to see Rodgers, they walked away with a mutual interest in making a partnership happen.
Still, the delay it took from the posting Wingo’s tweet to the actual comments from Rodgers resulted in plenty of speculation that Wingo jumped the gun or was wrong. Further, other insiders were saying they had not heard anything was done yet.
But barring a stunner, Rodgers is going to the Jets. Green Bay wants him out, Rodgers wants to leave and the Jets are desperate to get him. On CBS Sports Radio’s “The Zach Gelb Show,” Wingo responded to the criticism.
“Look, I’m sort of in a way where I don’t really care, you know? Say whatever you want. I knew the information was solid,” Wingo said. “The same sources that told me that if Randall Cobb doesn’t sign in 2021 he’s not going back there, it was the same person that told me all the other stuff that happened around the 2021 draft – same people, rather. So, I knew the information was good. It was just a matter of letting it play out.”
It’s not entirely clear when the deal will get pushed through for good, but Wingo said he didn’t expect the process to drag out much – citing the very sources that have been feeding him Rodgers info.
